Why Use the Random Color Generator?

Click Generate and this random color generator shows one fresh color at a large size with its HEX, RGB and HSL codes, plus a grid of 12 more random colors below it. Every square in the grid copies its HEX on click, so you can grab a color the moment it catches your eye. Use it to break a creative block, choose placeholder colors for a prototype, or find an unexpected starting point you would never have picked on purpose.

How to Use the Random Color Generator

  1. Press the Generate button to produce a new featured color and a fresh grid of 12 more.
  2. Read the HEX, RGB and HSL codes for the large color and press Copy on the one you need.
  3. Scan the grid of 12 extra colors and click any square to copy its HEX code.
  4. Keep pressing Generate until something sparks an idea, copying favorites as you go, since each click replaces the current set.

Best For

  • Picking a surprise accent color to break out of a familiar palette.
  • Assigning placeholder colors to avatars, tags or test data while prototyping.
  • Running a creative warm-up or design challenge built around a randomly drawn color.
  • Choosing an unbiased color for a game, art prompt or classroom activity.

Pro Tip

Treat a random color as a hue suggestion, not a final answer. Once one catches your eye, copy its HSL values and adjust the saturation and lightness to suit your project, or paste it into the Color Shades Generator to build a usable range around it. If you need random colors in your own code that look like one family, randomize only the hue and keep saturation and lightness fixed.

FAQ

Random Color Generator FAQ

How does a random color generator work?

Most random color generators pick a random value from 0 to 255 for each of red, green and blue, or one random number from 0 to 16,777,215 written as six hex digits. The result is then displayed in formats such as HEX, RGB and HSL. Because there are so many possibilities, you will rarely see the same color twice.

How many HEX colors are there?

There are 16,777,216 six-digit HEX colors, because each of the three channels has 256 possible values and 256 × 256 × 256 = 16,777,216. They run from #000000 (black) to #FFFFFF (white). The two extra alpha digits of an 8-digit code multiply that by another 256 levels of transparency.

How do I generate a random HEX color in JavaScript?

A common one-liner is '#' + Math.floor(Math.random() * 16777216).toString(16).padStart(6, '0'). Math.random() returns a number below 1, multiplying by 16,777,216 covers every possible color, and padStart keeps leading zeros so the code always has six digits.

What is the difference between a random color and a random palette?

A random color generator gives you independent colors with no relationship between them, which is ideal for surprise and variety. A random palette generator builds a set of colors from a harmony rule so they work together. Use this tool for single picks and the Random Color Palette Generator when you need a matching group.
