Why Use the HTML Color Names?

Browse every one of the 148 HTML color names in a searchable grid, with each swatch showing its HEX value and copying it on click. Type part of a name such as sea or slate to narrow the list, or filter by color family to see all the reds, blues, browns or grays together. A complete reference table with every name, HEX code and RGB value is printed below the grid, making this page a handy bookmark for students, email developers and anyone writing quick CSS.

How to Use the HTML Color Names

  1. Type part of a color name into the search box, for example blue, coral or light, to filter the grid as you type.
  2. Choose a color family filter such as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, brown, white or gray/black to see related names together.
  3. Click any swatch to copy its HEX code to your clipboard.
  4. Scroll down to the full reference table when you need the RGB values or want to scan every name in one list.

Best For

  • Picking a readable named color like tomato or steelblue for a CSS tutorial, code demo or classroom exercise.
  • Looking up the HEX value of a named color found in old HTML or a legacy stylesheet.
  • Finding a quick placeholder color while prototyping a layout before the real palette is chosen.
  • Comparing similar names side by side, such as navy, midnightblue and darkblue, to see how they actually differ.

Pro Tip

Named colors are perfect for prototypes, teaching and debugging, where seeing border: 2px solid red is clearer than a HEX code. For production design systems, store your final colors as HEX, RGB or HSL tokens instead, because named colors rarely match a brand exactly and offer no in-between shades. A handy debugging trick is to outline every element in a bright named color like magenta to spot layout problems quickly.

FAQ

HTML Color Names FAQ

How many HTML color names are there?

There are 148 named colors defined in the CSS Color specification, and all modern browsers support them in both HTML and CSS. A few are aliases for the same color, such as aqua and cyan, fuchsia and magenta, and the gray and grey spellings. The list also includes rebeccapurple, the most recent addition.

Are HTML color names case-sensitive?

No. CSS color keywords are case-insensitive, so Red, RED and red all produce the same color. Lowercase is the usual convention in modern code and matches how the names appear in the specification.

Why is darkgray lighter than gray in CSS?

CSS color names come from two older sources: the HTML 4 color list and the X11 color list used by Unix systems. gray (#808080) comes from HTML 4, while darkgray (#A9A9A9) comes from X11, where the scale was defined differently. When the lists were merged, both values were kept, leaving darkgray lighter than gray.

Should I use color names or HEX codes in CSS?

Color names are easier to read and remember, which makes them great for prototypes, examples and quick fixes. HEX, RGB or HSL codes give you access to millions of colors and exact brand matches, so they are the better choice for production styles and design systems. Both are equally supported by browsers.
